What this estimate assumes

This calculator models a simple time-of-use tariff: each hour of the day belongs to one rate period, and each appliance runs a fixed number of consecutive hours starting at a chosen time.

The shift suggestion finds the cheapest consecutive block of hours for each appliance's duration. Real utilities may add demand charges, seasonal tiers, minimum bills, taxes or connection fees this tool does not model.

The result is an estimate for planning and comparison, not an invoice. Your utility bill is the authority and may differ. Everything runs locally — nothing you type leaves your browser.

The formula

Energy per hour = appliance watts / 1000

Cost per appliance = sum of (energy × rate) for each scheduled hour

Shifted savings = current cost − cheapest consecutive block cost

Worked example: a 500W washing machine running 1 hour at 9 AM (standard rate $0.14/kWh) costs $0.07. Moving it to 5 AM (off-peak $0.08/kWh) costs $0.04, saving $0.03/day or $0.78/month on a 5-day week.
