10 Practical Ways to Reduce Your Home Electricity Bill

The fastest way to reduce your electricity bill is to measure first, then act: the biggest savings come from heating, cooling, water heating and always-on appliances - not from unplugging phone chargers. These ten changes target the real consumers.

1. Map your usage first

2. Tame space heating

3. Use hot water less

Electric water heaters are the second-biggest consumers in many homes. Take shorter showers, fix dripping hot taps, wash clothes at 30°C, and set the water heater thermostat to about 60°C rather than higher. Insulating the tank and pipes pays for itself quickly.

4. Manage the AC

Air conditioning is the summer counterpart of heating. Set the temperature only a few degrees below outdoor temperature, use ceiling fans to feel cooler, close curtains during the day, and service filters regularly - clogged filters make the unit run longer.

5. Switch to LED

An LED bulb uses about 9 W for the same light as a 60 W incandescent - roughly 85% less energy. With lights running several hours a day, swapping the bulbs in frequent-use rooms is one of the quickest paybacks in home efficiency. Modern LEDs last tens of thousands of hours, so you also buy fewer bulbs.

6. Kill standby power

TVs, consoles, set-top boxes, chargers and computers draw 3-15 W each while “off”. Ten devices at 5 W round the clock is about 1.2 kWh per day - over a year, more than 430 kWh. 7. Cook with covered pans

8. Run laundry smartly

Washing at 30°C instead of 60°C cuts the heating energy of each cycle, and most modern detergents are formulated for it. Dryers are heavy consumers: spin-dry thoroughly before drying, run full loads, and dry two loads back to back to reuse residual heat. Line-drying where possible costs nothing.

9. Shift to off-peak

Many regions offer time-of-use tariffs where electricity costs less at night. Running the dishwasher, washing machine or EV charger during off-peak hours can cut the cost of those loads by a third or more. Check your bill for different day/night rates - if it only has one price, there is nothing to shift.

10. Upgrade the old devices

Fridges older than 15 years, old water heaters and inefficient AC units are the biggest upgrade wins because they run for hours every day.
