How Many Watts Does a Refrigerator Use? Typical Consumption Explained

A typical household refrigerator draws about 100-200 watts while the compressor is running and uses roughly 1-2 kWh per day, which works out to 30-60 kWh per month. Because the compressor cycles on and off, its average wattage is far lower than the start-up surge.

Running watts vs start-up watts

Refrigerator labels usually show the maximum power draw, which happens for a few seconds when the compressor starts - commonly 400-800 W. During normal operation, the compressor runs at a lower running wattage of roughly 100-200 W for a typical no-frost fridge, cycling on and off throughout the day.

This is why calculating consumption from the label maximum overestimates energy use by two to three times. For a realistic estimate, use the running wattage - or the typical 1-2 kWh per day figure - not the start-up value.

Energy use depends on how long the compressor runs. A well-sealed fridge in a 20°C room may run only 25-35% of the time.   • Door openings - each opening lets cold air out; the compressor then runs longer to recover.
  • Thermostat setting - colder settings cost more energy. Recommended: 3-4°C for the fridge compartment, -18°C for the freezer.
  • Age and condition - worn door seals leak cold air; old models lack modern insulation and compressors.
  • Frost build-up - thick frost insulates the evaporator and forces longer running times.

How to cut fridge running costs

  1. Keep the fridge away from heat sources and allow air to circulate around the condenser.
  2. Test the door seal: a banknote should feel gripped when the door is closed.
  3. Defrost before frost exceeds 5 mm.
  4. Set temperatures to 3-4°C / -18°C instead of the coldest setting.
  5. Cool leftovers before refrigerating, and let hot food cool first.
  6. Replace units older than 15 years with an energy-efficient model - the payback is usually strongest on this single purchase.
