What this estimate assumes
This calculator estimates energy from the wattage and usage you enter for each appliance. Active energy = watts × quantity × duty cycle × active hours per week. Standby energy covers the remaining hours in the week at the standby wattage you specify.
Monthly figures use a 52-week year divided by 12 months. Weekly figures use your days-per-week directly. The daily figure is the annual total divided by 365.25.
Appliances with thermostats or cycles (refrigerators, air conditioners, ovens) draw less on average than their rated wattage. The duty-cycle field lets you account for this. Treat results as planning estimates, not meter readings.
Cost multiplies your kWh by your unit rate only. Standing charges, taxes, tiers, and time-of-use tariffs are not included.
The formula
active hours/week = hours/day × days/week
standby hours/week = max(0, 168 − active hours/week)
weekly kWh = (active Wh + standby Wh) ÷ 1,000
monthly kWh = weekly kWh × 52 ÷ 12
cost = kWh × price per kWh
Worked example: five 9 W LED bulbs running 5 hours a day, 7 days a week use about 1.39 kWh per month — about $0.22 at $0.16/kWh. Add a refrigerator at 150 W with a 35% duty cycle and you get another 13.9 kWh per month. Try the Load example button to see a sample household.
Understanding household electricity use
The biggest electricity users are usually heating, cooling and water heating. An air conditioner or electric water heater can easily account for 30–50% of a household bill. Lighting, electronics and small appliances typically add up to much less. This calculator helps you see that split clearly.
