Metadata stripping, locally
The tool reads the binary structure of JPEG, PNG and WebP files, identifies EXIF, XMP, IPTC and other metadata chunks, then writes a clean copy with those sections removed. GPS coordinates, camera model, author names, copyright and software tags are all stripped.
All processing runs entirely in your browser — no file is uploaded to any server. The output is a standard image file viewable in any application.
What this tool assumes
Supported formats: JPEG, PNG and WebP. HEIC, TIFF and RAW files are not currently supported. The tool strips standard metadata sections — if a file uses non-standard or embedded metadata, some fields may remain.
Always verify the output file before sharing, especially for images containing sensitive information. The original file is not modified — a new clean copy is created.

Does File Metadata Sanitizer upload my files?
No. All processing happens locally in your browser with JavaScript. Files are never uploaded, stored or logged — the tool even works offline.
Which file types are supported?
JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg), PNG (.png), GIF (.gif) and PDF (.pdf). Files in other formats are rejected with a clear message.
Does sanitizing reduce image quality?
JPEGs are re-encoded at about 92% quality, which is visually indistinguishable from the original but changes the pixel data slightly. PNG and GIF images are rebuilt losslessly — their pixels and animation are preserved exactly.
How is this different from renaming a file?
Renaming changes only the filename on your computer. File Metadata Sanitizer rewrites the file's internal structure, removing the embedded metadata blocks themselves.
